Fear is one of the worst human emotions,
yet sadly also one of the most common in the modern world. Many people find
themselves living a life in fear. From carrying a gun, in case of assault, from
having security system at home in case of being robbed, through to avoiding
certain places, foods and animals.

The
misinterpretation of fear
|
|
| |
Sadly, not only is fear one of the most
common negative emotions, it is also one of the most misinterpreted. In modern
psychological thought, fears are translated into phobias, examples of ancient
"fight or flight" responses gone wrong in a modern context.
|
|
| |
The word fear when experienced, indeed
has many of the same characteristics as the "fight or flight"
response of the body. Yet the origin and the nature of the word is far more
sinister. |
|
| |
The origin of the word fear is Old
English and essentially meant "danger". The word danger itself comes
from the Latin dominus and meant "power of a lord, jurisdiction,
power to harm, punish." In other words, the heart of fear is "threat
of potential future pain from some external power".

Fear as the tool of
control
|
|
| |
In contrast to the modern view of fear as
something more associated to modern living and law and order, fear is and has
always been the rough tool of the controlling powers. As humans do not like
pain, the threat of pain has always had an ability to keep large groups under
control, even when they are unjustly treated.
|
|
| |
Fear only breaks down when a group is
actually experiencing such pain (e.g. starvation, disease) that the "threat
of pain" has no effect.

The fear of us and some absolute |
|
| |
For many of us our greatest fear is that somehow we shall be damned by ones own God, Allah, One Spirit or Unique Collective Awareness. For many of us are told by our churches that these are wicked times and that we must atone for our sins. |
|
| |
The end of fear
|
|
| |
Fear and the promotion of fear by elected officials and people in power should no longer be tolerated by enlightened individuals. |
