Evil can only thrive when good people choose to do nothing.
This has been proven again and again over millennia. Everytime apologists and people of weak character argue for pacifism and ignorance, evil only grows more emboldened and powerful. And it has always been that only when individuals choose to take a stand against tyranny and evil that ultimately it has been vanquished.
Ignorance is a fact of life and of living. There are simply too many things happening around us for even the most aware human being to be aware of them all.
In fact, most of us are blissfully unaware of most of what is happening around us, a truth understood by the bag snatcher through to the urban terrorist.
Ideas beyond the capacity for our minds to comprehend
One of the great claims of holy scholars that all the religions have in common is that divine wisdom stretches the mind. It pushes us to reach out further than before. It challenges us to think beyond our limited foresight.
Sometimes this is hard. The concepts of One Islam, One Faith, One Spirit and New Jerusalem, not to mention the Ucadia language, UCADIA model are all huge ideas.
Ignorance can sometimes be a coping mechanism. A way of stopping a melt down when confronted with such huge ideas as bringing life back to Mars and defending the Earth.
  Deliberate self ignorance
Yet there is also another kind of ignorance- deliberate self- ignorance where we choose not be witness, we consciously choose to switch off. This kind of behaviour is most graphic in the face of any traumatic event within a city such as a fire, a mugging, a car crash. A few brave souls are prepared to help while the majority of us choose to stand and watch as ignorant ghouls.
Deliberate self ignorance also finds itself into our attitudes of our world, our health and our future. Yes the planet is dying, but I don't have time. Yes I am obese, but I'll get around to a diet tomorrow. Yes the belief systems that I grew up with no longer stand up against science and common sense, but its too late to change.
Deliberate self-ignorance is the inertia towards disaster. It is the short sighted stupidity of the bureaucracy that leads to a preventable death, that leads to the sacking/charging of the person, that leads to their life forever being miserable.
"If only.." are the words most spoken after the event. Yet faced with the same choice, it is doubtful that we would conquer our own deliberate self-ignorance to make the right decision.
  Finding answers
