Work is an essential function of being human and self-worth. Virtually all human beings perform some kind of meaningful work during their lives. In exchange, most people usually receive some kind of monetary wage for their services.
However in developed countries, the age of mass consumption has placed even greater pressure on the worker to get more from their wage- in order to maintain or upgrade their perceived "standard of living". The net result is a massive increase in stress and unhappiness amongst people in developed countries who feel they are trapped on a treadmill of unending payments, bills and work.
