Confident people get noticed. Over confident people are considered arrogant and usually disliked because of their attitude. Yet quietly confident people are usually admired.
Confidence is sadly a frequently misrepresented emotion. For centuries, religions such as christianity have seen it as the enemy of humility and the outward sign of pride.
The origin of the word confidence is the Latin word confidere (to trust, to have faith in). Hence the original meaning of confidence is literally "to have trust or have faith in an object or person".
It makes sense then that a confident person is someone who has a general trust in themselves. In contrast, a doubtful person, does not.
Confidence then should be seen as a positive emotion to be encouraged, not attacked as a negative emotion as only a confident person can really thrive to achieve the best they can be.
